Hope | Hebrews 6:17-18

Estimated reading time: 3 minutes

Our daily hope is in God who cannot lie and has promised to share with us His purpose.

Bible Verse

Hebrews 6:17-18 (NASB) 17 In the same way God, desiring even more to show to the heirs of the promise the unchangeableness of His purpose, interposed with an oath, 18 so that by two unchangeable things in which it is impossible for God to lie, we who have taken refuge would have strong encouragement to take hold of the hope set before us.

Hope

Just like the Israelites had hope in God through the promises made to Abraham, so we have hope in God through the promises He has made to us. God does not lie. He will fulfill His promises. We see God’s fidelity to His children throughout the Bible. In the fulfillment of one of His greatest promises, we have record that He sent His Son Jesus to be the one time sacrifice for our sins. Through Jesus, the Old Testament system of sacrifices was abolished. Jesus walked on this earth just the same as the rest of mankind. Yet, He did so without sin. He was tempted in every way just as we are and was without sin. Jesus gives us an example of how to live in a world filled with temptation. We must have the strength and the courage to follow His example of how to live life.

Application

God places unshakable hope before us. It is our responsibility to reach out and take hold of that hope. We have access to God’s hope in two ways. First, we must take refuge in Him. When times are hard, and even when times are good, we must seek out His protection. God will protect us in all things. But we must take the first step toward Him in faith. And second, we must be encouraged to take hold of the hope He sets before us. We can be encouraged by the faith that we have in Him. And we can be encouraged by those around us to take hold of the hope that He has placed before us. There are times when we are to be the encourager, encouraging others. And there are times when we are to be the encouraged, being encouraged by others. All that we might take hold of the hope He has set before us.

Have you taken refuge in the safety and security of God’s promises?

Have you been encouraged to reach out and take hold of the hope that God sets before you?

Reflect on these verses and allow God to encourage you to reach out and take hold of the hope He is offering you.

Prayer

Lord, thank You that we can take refuge in You and that You give us the opportunity to take hold of the hope You have to offer. Help me to take hold of Your hope today.
