Prayer | Psalm 119:169-170

Estimated reading time: 3 minutes

Prayer is a privilege we have regardless of the situation or the circumstance.

Bible Verse

Psalms 119:169-170 169 Let my cry come before You, O LORD; Give me understanding according to Your word. 170 Let my supplication come before You; Deliver me according to Your word.

Prayer

In this passage, the Psalmist is crying out in prayer to the Lord his God. One of the things we need is God’s understanding when we face the storms of life. Our wisdom is not enough to get us through the easy times, much less the difficult ones. The Psalmist did not ask God to give him what he wanted. He asked God to give him understanding according to God’s word. He also asked God to deliver him. When we find ourselves in difficult times, the two things we need more than anything else are God’s understanding and His deliverance. God offers to be our refuge, but we must seek Him. God offers us His wisdom, but we must build a relationship with Him. The only way to get to know God is by spending time with Him in His word. This is how He speaks to us.

Application

We are given the privilege of prayer because God wants to help us through our difficult times. Paul tells us that we are to offer prayer and supplication with thanksgiving in everything (Philippians 4:6-7). When we are not properly focused on God, our difficulty can breed anxiety. God does not want us to be anxious. Anxiety does us no good. When we are in the midst of the storms of life, all we really want is peace. We find that peace in prayer. God answers our prayers by granting us a peace that surpasses all comprehension. And He will guard our hearts and our minds from the attacks of Satan. But the focus of our prayer should not be on what we want, but rather according to God’s word. We think we know what we need. But, God knows what we actually need. And our prayer life will be much better when we learn to ask God to do according to His will rather than according to our will.

Are you facing difficult times?

Have you sought God’s answers to your prayers according to His will?

Meditate on these verses and ask God to show you how to pray according to His will.

Prayer

Lord, thank You that when I pray, You hear. Thank you that You provide me with Your understanding and Your deliverance.
