Purpose | Judges 6:14-16

Estimated reading time: 3 minutes

God has a purpose for each of us. We must listen for His voice and be obedient when He calls.

Bible Verse

Judges 6:14-16 14 The LORD looked at him and said, “Go in this your strength and deliver Israel from the hand of Midian. Have I not sent you?” 15 He said to Him, “O Lord, how shall I deliver Israel? Behold, my family is the least in Manasseh, and I am the youngest in my father’s house.” 16 But the LORD said to him, “Surely I will be with you, and you shall defeat Midian as one man.”

Purpose

God had a purpose for Gideon, and it was a big purpose. God called Gideon to go in his strength and deliver Israel from the hands of Midian. God tells Gideon that He has called him for this purpose. We can learn a lot about ourselves from Gideon’s reply to God. Gideon asks God how he is to achieve such a great thing. From Gideon’s perspective, his family was the least in the land and Gideon was the youngest (least) in his father’s household.  Gideon suffered from lack of confidence. What Gideon must have been asking himself, and what he did ask God, is why me? There are other families greater than ours. And even if our family, there are certainly others within my family that are more qualified than me. Yet, God had patience with Gideon and reassured Gideon that He would be with him.

Application

Throughout this chapter of the book of Judges, we see that God reassures Gideon that He has a purpose for him. Gideon asks God on several occaisions to reaffirm the purpose to which God has called Him. And God provides Gideon the reassurance that he needed to carry out God’s will. Now, we do not necessarily speak directly with God as Gideon did, but we can hear God’s voice through His words in the Bible if we tune our ears and our minds and our hearts to hear Him. God has a unique purpose for each of us. There will be times when we question that purpose. And when we ask God for reassurance, He will provide us the assurance that we need. Like Gideon, we must remain faithful to God even when we may lack confidence.

Are you seeking God’s purpose for your life?

Have you opened your heart and your mind to hear the voice of God?

Meditate on these verses and ask God to reaffirm His purpose for your life.

Prayer

Lord, thank You that You have a purpose for me. Help me to seek and to know Your purpose for my life. Give me the strength and the courage to carry out the purpose to which I have been called.
