Trust | Psalm 56:9-11

Estimated reading time: 3 minutes

Especially during the storms of life, we must learn to fully trust our God.

Bible Verse

Psalms 56:9-11 9 Then my enemies will turn back in the day when I call; This I know, that God is for me. 10 In God, whose word I praise, In the LORD, whose word I praise, 11 In God I have put my trust, I shall not be afraid. What can man do to me?

Trust

David was a man who trusted God completely. And yet, despite the trust that he placed in God, he still endured difficult times. God had chosen him to lead Israel. But first David had to go through a long season of testing. His faith was tested as a young shepherd boy when he stood against Goliath. And he was later tested when Saul tried over and over again to kill David. David knew when to stand and fight and when to retreat and seek safety. He knew because He trusted God and because, through prayer, he sought the guidance of God. Because he trusted God, he could praise God even when he was fleeing for his life. And because of the trust he had in God, he could praise God when even his life was in jeopardy. David, in verse 4, poses a great question we should all consider: “What can mere man do to me?”

Application

When we are born, we know how to trust. We trust and rely on our parents for our very existence. They provide us with food, shelter, and clothing. Sometimes at an early age, and sometimes later in life, our trust in man is tested. And we find, in many ways, that our trust is found wanting for more. Sometimes man breaks our trust intentionally. Other times, man breaks our trust because we all have our shortcomings and the break in trust is not intentional. Regardless, we come to a point where we may begin to ask in what or in whom can I put my trust. I have found in life, that the only Person in whom we can put our full trust is in our God. Does He allow us to go through seasons of difficulty in life? Yes. All we have to do is look to the Israelites in the Old Testament to understand that we will go through times of hardship in this life. And sometimes those times of hardship last for an uncomfortably long period of time. All of this is to teach us to trust in Him. And when others see the trust that we have in God, they may come to that same saving faith and trust in our God through our example.

Are you suffering difficult times in your life?

Is your trust in God being tested?

Take time to reflect on these verses, the life of David, and the trust that David placed in God even in his most trying times.

Prayer

Lord God, thank You for delivering me from my difficulties. Like David, help me put my complete trust in You today.
